10 Years of Vermont Town Meeting Day Turnout

Interactive Turnout Statistics & Polling Locations

Town Meeting Day, celebrated annually on the first Tuesday in March, is a cornerstone of Vermont's democratic tradition. This interactive map displays historical turnout statistics from municipalities across Vermont. Explore each town to view floor vote rates and Australian ballot rates (which include absentee ballot counts).

Many towns offer a mix of Australian ballot and floor vote depending on the questions at hand. As a result, percentages do not add to 100%. Red markers indicate polling locations. Use the year selector to compare turnout across different years. Data was sourced from Secretary of State VT Office and is available here.

Voting Trends across Vermont

Floor voting has declined, with surges in Australian ballot participation during general election years

The percentage of Vermonters showing up in person for floor vote issues has decreased over time. Notably, 2016 and 2020 (both general election years) saw a spike in Australian ballot participation.

Floor voting participation is more common in small towns

In general, we see a higher percentage of registered voters showing up in person to debate local issues in smaller population towns. Data shown here is from 2022, the last year the Secretary of State provided complete turnout data for all towns.
